New Site Aims to Be the ‘eBay’ for College Students (AuctionBytes)

Rick Hulme and Beata Krzysztan have set out to create an online marketplace that combines the successful aspects of social networking with an easy-to-use auction format. Studentbid.net is targeted at students and faculty on college campuses, and the two founders, based in Oxford, England, will initially target colleges in the UK, with plans to expand to Europe, Australia, and the US.

EBay Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Meg Whitman, one of Silicon Valley’s most powerful women, received compensation in 2006 that the company valued at about $11.1 million, according to an analysis of a regulatory filing Monday.

The company deliberately leaves “it” undefined to emphasize the immense variety of goods available for auction on its site. “It” is anything a consumer can imagine. However, as eBay expands into myriad new businesses, some investors are puzzling over what it — eBay — is becoming.
